Martial Art Injuries
I have had 3 martial art injuries so far in my martial art career.
1). I experienced a pinched nerve in my neck that lasted about 2, maybe 3 months. I was in Sil-Lum Kung-fu Class, in which I jumped over a stool, rolled onto the mat, and was supposed to spring back up, but the latter didn’t happen. Somehow, with the way I rolled, my neck felt like a pair of sharp scissors pierced into it. And it was painful. But I survived with a lot of tiger balm, a heating pad, and my Tuhon, who helped me get through it.
2). Arthritis in my left foot. It was either 2009, maybe 2010 (I don’t exactly remember), I was sparring in Tae Kwon Do class, and I went down when I heard a very loud popping sound. My left foot hurt so bad I had to stop and hobble aside. I found out after an appointment with a podiatrist, I had arthritis, so in a surgery, I had it removed, my big left toe was straightened, and a bunion was removed. I was out of class for several months, with a pair of crutches that lasted 2 hours, a wheelchair that lasted 3 weeks, and a leg brace that lasted for about 3 months. I now have 12 screws and 2 plates in my left foot. But I survived, and I got through it.
3). In May of 2015, I was in Tae Kwon Do class (first night back in about 2 years) sparring as it was Fight Night. And I rolled/flipped backward, got back up, just to drop back down. I got back up again, and continued to spar until I had to stop and take off my boot. And blood oozed out. Long story short,… I ended up with a fractured open toe and in a plaster cast all the way up to my left knee for 6 weeks and in a walking post-op boot for about 8 months. I survived, and I slowly got through the 13 months it took to heal.
Despite my martial art injuries, I hope to return soon, as I see a black belt in my future.
I call this phase Pain, Strength, Endurance, Survival, and Persistence. Because I am a fighter.
